The hand-made plain clay tiles of Kent and Sussex are unparalleled for their warmth of colour and texture. No where else are tiles used in such profusion, adorning not only the roofs of buildings but the walls too. Historic country homes, churches, town houses, village cottages, farm buildings - all are made the more attractive for the use of these hand-made tiles.

'Peg' tiles, as they are known, have been made and used in Kent since at least the C13. The name derives from the method of fixing the tiles to battens with small round, wooden pegs driven through square holes which are punched in the tile at the moulding stage. The slight variations of source material, hand-moulding, drying and firing give each tile a subtlety of colour, shape and texture, which, when hung, imparts a liveliness to the building. The uneven split laths upon which the tiles are hung also contributes to the character of tiled areas.

With the introduction of slate as an alternative roofing material and the development of machine-made concrete tiles, the hand-made tile industry in Kent began to decline and ceased altogether in the first half of this century. The recent resurgance of interest in the environment and recognition of the value of conserving historic buildings has brought the need to develop a new supply of peg-tiles for both the repair of existing buildings and to enable new ones to fit comfortably into their surroundings. The market in second-hand tiles was thrown into disarray on the night of October the 16th, 1987 when hurricane force winds stripped roofs and sent tiles crashing to the ground.

There is now a clear need to revive the pegtile industry if the character of our historic buildings and areas is to be maintained. Modern machine-made day or concrete tiles do not have the same qualities of colour and texture as the traditional hand-made tile.

A few craft-based, workshops have started to produce 'specials', that is hand-made fittings such as ridges, hips and valleys and are developing techniques for making the plain tiles cost-effectively.
