Turned up corners on asphalt shingles
Turned up edges is one of the most common roof problems with asphalt or fibreglass shingles. To work these shingles must have a good seal. The best seal is the tar strip in the middle of the shingle. When the shingles are nailed down this tar strip glues the top shingle to the bottom one that it overlaps to create a water proof barrier. When the edges of the shingles turn up, elements can easily get under the shingle. Water under the top layer of shingle can freeze and thaw easily causing leaks. A turned up edge can easily grab the wind which will pull the shingle's tar strip loose and cause leaks. The good news is this is an easy fix. Get a tube of roofing tar caulking, and put a good sized spot of tar caulking under each tab that is turned up. You will need to press the edges down in place for a while until the caulking "glues" it down. This fix will prolong the life of your roof and prevent leaks.
Cracked rubber seal around a bathroom stack
The bathroom stack is a pipe that comes up through your roof to vent what amounts to sewer gas. Typically on modern homes, these are ABS pipes with a flexible rubber-type seal. When this seal hardens and cracks, you will get roofing leaks in the shingles around the pipe. To fix this problem, you must remove the old seal by gently prying the shingles away from it, pry it loose or cut it up, and remove it. Before installing the new seal, you should inspect around the pipe to ensure there is no water damage and repair it if there is any. To install the new seal, place the new rubber seal over the pipe. Place the top edge under at least one row of shingles, and the bottom of the seal on top of the shingles. Now gently lift the rubber seal up a bit so you can use tar caulking under it to form a water-tight seal. Press the rubber down in place. Now you need to use the tar caulking to "glue" each tab of the shingle down in place to maintain that water-tight seal. When completed it should look like you never lifted any shingles.
A leak
Everyone who owns a house dreads a leak in the roof. This can show up as water running down a wall, growing brown spots on ceilings, or a large bulge in your ceiling.
